🌷Springtime Sensory Joy: Inclusive Adventures With Neurodivergent Adults 🌷
Happy Spring! Every blossom, chirp, and breeze celebrates renewal and connection! Experiencing springtime fun together can improve emotional connections as well. Let's create some moments of connection, inclusivity, and fun!
As a parent or caregiver of a neurodivergent adult, you may feel like you're always competing with phone and computer screens! Here are some tips to work some fresh spring activites and some of the sun's warmth into your daily routine.
Sensory-Friendly Activity Ideas
The #1 goal here is to tailor activities toward fun for everyone. Get ready for some great ideas when you ask your loved one what they would like to do! Just be sure that whatever it is, you are taking into account thier adulthood, which may include friends, thier sensory limitations, and are okay stopping if an activity is getting overwhelming for them. This means leaning toward settings that are more self-paced and where there are calmer areas to take breaks from any sensory overload. Bring anything they may need to enjoy thier time including water, snacks, or sensory-friendly tools like sunglasses, a hat, headphones or earplugs.
The goal is to embrace thier individuality and learn how to connect with them on thier own terms, which may include screentime or music through earbuds. As a parent, it can feel wierd allowing activites with unlimited screentime or earbud wearing. But then I remember: 1. My son is an adult, not a child. 2. Accommodations like this help my son enjoy activites more. 3. We're still spending time together and having a good time. 4. I get a little bit of an emotional break anytime he is busy! It's a net gain even if I have to defend it to people who don't understand our needs.
