We cherish the milestones in our loved one's lives from their very first steps. But what happens when the path we envisioned takes an unexpected turn? For me, my son's long road to an official diagnosis as an adult was a life changing process in my parenting ourney.
I felt a mix of relief, confusion, validation, and overwhelm. I was in uncharted territory, unsure of what to do next or even which questions to ask. What did this mean for our future? Where should I start? Those early days were a whirlwind of learning and emotional processing for me. Looking back, they also allowed me to deepen my understanding and acceptance of the things I couldn't control or fix as a parent.
The Pros and Cons of Professional Diagnosis
In our case, diagnosis was a crucial step in understanding my son's needs, adjusting my parenting style, educating family and friends, and getting him expert support. There are , however, pros and cons.
Pros:
Access to Resources: A formal diagnosis can be required to apply for specialized programs and services that support basic needs, education, employment, transportation, and housing. The actual availability of these is quite limited, though.
Validation: It can provide validation and clarity about a lifetime of unique experiences and challenges. An official diagnosis can also make a difference with friends or family who don't understand neurodivergence or who are skeptical of what they may consider "excuses" that are not backed up by a doctor of some sort.
Community: Although self-diagnosed neurodivergence is becoming more accepted among online communities, an official diagnosis may still be required for some types of support groups. Either way, most find it very helpful to connect with others who share similar joys and challenges and who can provide a sense of belonging, support, and practical help for eachother.
Cons:
Lack of Resources for Adults: Very few professionals are experts specialized in diagnosing neurodivergence, espcially autism, in adults. It can be hard to find them and they may have wait lists, not accept insurance, etc... Many people are surprised to find that an official diagnosis does not make them automotically eligible for supportive services and programs. Even with an official diagnosis, you will still need to apply for programs which may require ongoing advocacy and follow up to actually access and may have long wait lists for services.
Time, Expense, and Emotional Impact: The diagnostic process can be time consuming and expensive, even if health insurance covers it. There may be very long wait lists to even start the process and it can be emotionally taxing for everyone.
Stigma: Diagnosis can carry a stigma, leading to misconceptions or biases from others. Even with an official diagnosis, others may still dismiss or minimize it. A dignosis may inadvertently place limits or expectations on someone's actual abilities, potentially overlooking their unique strengths. Some diagnoses may also add extra hoops to jump through or legal limitations on things like driving or immigrating to other coutries.
The Journey of Understanding and Acceptance
My first step after the diagnosis was to educate myself. I devoured books, articles, and resources about neurodivergence, trying to grasp the nuances of my son's unique needs and strengths. I reached out to professionals and looked for support groups, but there were few who focused on neurodivergent adults. My own research turned into a listing of resources and professionals I shared with other families like mine.
But it wasn't just about acquiring knowledge; it was about embracing a new perspective. I had to let go of old parenting expectations while also affirming that my son isn't broken or in need of fixing; he is beautifully unique.
The Value of Self-Diagnosis
I also learned to acknowledge the value of self-diagnosis. Undiagnosed neurodivergent adults have a experienced a lifetime of struggle without truly knowing the clinical specifics of why. While a professional diagnosis can open doors to support and resources, there are many reasons why it may not be possible. Self-diagnosing isn't done on a fleeting whim. Most self-diagnosed adults have taken many self-tests and researched for a long time before self-diagnosing. Self-diagnosis can be a powerful acknowledgment of one's identity and a valid starting point for understanding one's needs and strengths.
Over time, I began to understand my son's strengths and challenges in ways that worked much better for us and my parenting approach changed with it. I tailored my support to meet his specific needs and let go of old expectations. I learned the power of patience, empathy, and unconditional love.
Through the years, I've witnessed my son's remarkable growth and resilience. He's achieved milestones that once seemed impossible, and he continues to surprise me with his talents and accomplishments. We've celebrated victories, big and small, and stood by eachother's side during moments of frustration and self-discovery.
Conclusion
My journey with a neurodivergent adult child has been profound, marked by growth, understanding, and a deep bond that transcends words. While the time around his diagnosis was undoubtedly challenging, it set us on a path of acceptance and celebration of neurodiversity. I've come to realize that my role is not to change my son, but to provide unwavering support, encouragement, and love.
In sharing my story, I hope to reach other families at the beginning of their own journey. Know that you're not alone, that the path may be challenging, but it's also filled with moments of profound beauty and growth. Together, as a community of families, we can navigate the world of neurodiversity with love, acceptance, and hope.
